If you love Pete And Pete, let’s say, don’t just lament the loss of the show on the ’net, or say “Hey, remember Clarissa?” Watching old DVDs to try and recapture the feeling you once had the first time you saw something might be fun, but it can be a little pointless, too. Blasphemy, I know, considering that’s basically what we’re doing here—and then writing about it. Pete’s lesson—and our lesson—from this show is not just “find a song and love it,” but rather, “if you love something, go make something someone else can love.” Polaris did this for Pete when they accidentally fed him the song that he loved. The Blowholes did this when they played “Surfin’ Bum, Surfin’ Fun” for grumpy Fred Hurley. The creators of Pete And Pete deep, I know did this when they heard a Magnetic Fields song they liked or saw a Hal Hartley movie and said, “Hey, we should introduce this band or these actors to other people.” It’s a little bit of a stretch, maybe, but it makes sense all the same. Nostalgia’s a hell of a drug, especially these days. Every other Tumblr is all, “Remember so and so?” People are nostalgic for things that happened earlier this week, like the days before the East Coast earthquake. That’s fun and everything, but it’s dangerous. It puts this hazy veil over everything in the past and all the time we spend thinking about those things, we’re not making new things, pushing art and culture forward, or saying, “Hey, Pete And Pete did so much for me, so maybe it can do that for someone else, or maybe I can take those ideas and, even though I don’t make TV shows, do whatever I can with them to make someone else happy. “ If we’re stuck in the past—or in Pete’s case, stuck listening to the same song over and over again, even if it’s our very favorite song ever—we’re not moving forward. That song’ll still be there in a day or a week when we want to go back and listen to it and feel that way all over again—unlike the unreleased DVD set of The Adventures Of Pete And Pete’s third season, but that’s another story all together.”

- “Hard Day’s Pete” | The Adventures Of Pete And Pete | TV Club | TV | The A.V. But I get that same feeling of anxiety with it that I do when I go into a library, where it is just like, here is (nearly) every piece of this specific art that I love so much, how will I ever find the time to enjoy all of it.

I’ve started to build playlists off the Acclaimed Music song lists, if nothing else to educate me on all the songs I’m supposed to know. I’m in the 1920s right now and have stumbled upon some pretty cool stuff (and I know…these are all obvious to anyone who has heard the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music set). But it is pretty crazy to listen to a Blind Willie McTell song from 1928 and realize where Jack White stole a bunch of his moves from.

Going Home With Pulp | The Awl

Going Home With Pulp | The Awl

The Replacements Broke Up 20 Years Ago Today in Chicago

The Replacements Broke Up 20 Years Ago Today in Chicago

Backbeat Band 6-4-1994 Money, Long Tall Sally, and Helter...

Backbeat Band 6-4-1994 Money, Long Tall Sally, and Helter Skelter (by 20YearsInTheDakota)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Out In The Street

Look, there is a lot to make fun of regarding this project, but the thing everyone seems to miss is that it is called The Undefeated, yet I can think of, I don’t know, a time in 2008 when she was defeated.

"I was so convinced that this rare R-rated event comedy featuring women burping and farting for our..."

“I was so convinced that this rare R-rated event comedy featuring women burping and farting for our female amusement wouldn’t make over $13M, even $15M tops, that I promised Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson that I would leave Hollywood reporting forever if Bridesmaids did the $20 million he thought it would. Well, I’ve called the moving vans because I clearly have no idea what works at the domestic box office anymore. (So you won’t have Nikki to kick around in the comments section. Say goodbye now…) I couldn’t believe that this is why generations of women fought the feminist revolution: to ensure we had the same opportunities to watch our sex make the same raunchy movie stuff as men. I wasn’t alone. Tipsters told me that the studios weren’t touching any new film comedies that featured women until they saw how Bridesmaids did. “And they’re hoping it tanks or at least does business they can put a negative spin on,” one source emailed. “Talk to Natalie Portman about the double-talk she’s enduring over Best Buds, a female stoner comedy she’s trying to set up. When Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler or Seth Rogen tank, there are no ramifications. It’s ugly out there.” But Universal had faith in this net $32.5M-budget pic from the start, mostly pinned to the pedigree of mogul Judd Apatow’s banner behind it. Weeks of decent tracking popped dramatically going into this weekend, especially in the ‘unaided awareness’ category. It went into this weekend with great reviews from the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times and 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet I found the first trailer laugh-challenged along with the TV ads in heavy rotation, and the movie lacked big name stars (Saturday Night Live regular Kristen Wiig leads an ensemble cast of mostly TV actresses), and its release was middling but by no means giant. Whch is why I had such low expectations and now I’m packing up.”

-
The Mighty ‘Thor’ Holds Onto #1 Friday; ‘Bridesmaids’ Yucks Up $21.5M Weekend; Vampirical ‘Priest’ Bites For $14M – Deadline.com

Don’t you love people who report on entertainment that clearly don’t get entertainment? There are a variety of things wrong with Nikki Finke’s take on Bridesmaids. But the main one is that there are only about two or three “gross-out” scenes in Bridesmaids and it obviously isn’t the focus of the actual movie. They’re big comedic set-pieces, but that’s it.

However, the very first trailer for Bridesmaids only featured these gags, selling it as the “female Hangover.” And I wasn’t sold on that first trailer. I thought, “Well, I like all these people involved and I’m glad to see a women-centered comedy but are women supposed to be better/smarter than us? Why is this movie that is supposed to be a comedy by women using the same stupid comedy by men tricks?” But the rest of the marketing was true to the actual tone of the movie, which is sweet and funny and a little filthy, but so are the best women.

This further convinces me that Nikki Finke (and most of the people working for her) never actually see these movies and shows they are reporting on/are part of the awful Hollywood machine that wasn’t buying or listening to any pitches of female-centered projects until they saw if people actually went to go see Bridesmaids.

Ugh.
